Sometimes we need to go deeper,

Perhaps asking the question, "why do I need to know this?"

You may have experienced the attitude of, "until it becomes my problem, it's someone else's". Unfortunately, this is our human disposition. Until it becomes real to us, it merely doesn't register on our human empathy radar.

So how can this attitude change and our perspectives broaden, and do we want it too? We need awareness by walking in the shoes of those who are affected. Understanding their viewpoints creates empathy for their stories and experiences and can empower us to make a difference.

But this too can be a difficult conversation to listen to or even accept in our community. No wonder we're surprised when one day, by cause of disease, accident or only old age, we fight to maintain the belief that we're still young and do everything to argue these facts. Well, the facts are that it happens or it will. The problem is, I hear you say, 'I'm healthy. I'm fit, and I’m well. Accessible environments are for everyone else.'

This is why we have regulations and codes in our modern societies. They attempt to take account of our mobility and sensory faculties needs and the changes that will occur to them over our lifetime.

Standards work hard to guide us on what to design, construct and maintain for the built environment. But they are absent of this; The Why and How we need to consider the human condition and the fragility of our existence in the spaces and places that we build.

Staebl.academy bridges this divided and places you in the centre of the obstacles of others through our Learning Foundation Series and Course Modules'.

As designers and creators, custodians of the built environment, we have the opportunity to make our work useful and really meaningful.

As professionals who care, we get the chance to make a real difference today for tomorrow. This includes ourselves, our family and those within the communities that we live in and belong to.

Perspective is everything in design.

Take a look at the video lesson sample from one of our foundation course modules: “what it might be like if you were living with the vision-impairment diabetic retinopathy.”

Walking in their shoes you begin to understand why accessible design is required, how useful TGSIs, handrails, stair nosings and sufficient luminance contrast is to a blind or vision-impaired person living with diabetic retinopathy?

Who's affected by your design ideas, product selections or policy choices and why do these all deserve your attention?

Staebl.academy has taken the time to go deeper into gaining the awareness of the who, why and how, then passing it on to you. Understanding how sections of our community are affected by the built environment is critical to creating utility for those who move through it.

In creating in-depth learning modules informing and explaining people's needs, we seek to demystify why providing persons with a permanent, partial, or temporary disability makes inclusivity and diversity.

All Staebl.academy courses are in a micro-content format- (less than 5 minutes on average) - so you can digest one idea at a time. Original animations, moving images, and documented use of universal access elements are displayed and explained in visual, written and audio formats.

“When you understand why we need disability access and unlock the utility that comes with universal design, its value to your community, its positive economic and social benefits of equity and participation,

…you begin future-proofing the function of a space and adding delight to all who use it.”

Dean Homicki for Stæbl.academy

Is this Session right for me?

It's great to know what you in for before you start a series of learning sessions. It’s valuable to know your Instructor and Coach, what’s their expertise and certainly what they care about.

Short, introductory videos go before each learning series, starting with an overview of what you will learn and experience. You may be new to some topics or design feature. Perhaps you are experienced in one aspect but are absent in the context of the impact of your work?

Staebl.academy Learning and Foundation Series courses are designed to provide you with a broad perspective on any given subject with specificity as required for conformance.

Whether it is to understand a building code, a particular standard or how a person uses or relies upon a building element, each course considers the user first and those who have a duty-of-care in their design, implementation and management.
