Session 11 of 12

Living with: (NLP) No Light Perception

Course: TSA-TGSI-1.11 | Length: 2:45 mins | Instructor: Dean Homicki

Transcript

In this session, we're going to learn about:

What is it like living with: No Light Perception (NLP)?

In this module, we explore what a vision-impaired person may experience living with No Light Perception (NLP) and how the built environment may appear to them in their daily life.
To gain some insight, let's begin with:

What is No Light Perception (NLP)?

A person who is totally blind has no measurable or useable vision, and no light perception (NLP). Hence the term, No Light Perception.

A person living with No light perception could experience their environment in the following ways:

  • They may perceive: Greys or Multiple Colours at once

  • They could experience Dark or empty spaces in their eye that blocks the central field of vision

  • They cannot perceptive what the light is, hence the term No Light Perception (NLP). And interpret the world without experiencing it without any form of visual sight.

No light perception (NLP) is considered to be (Total Blindness)

What would it be like to have: No light perception
and how could it affect your orientation and mobility?

Simulation

Orientation in a built environment if you had: No light perception. In this simulation of what it might be like if you had no light perception, we are walking, descending a staircase, then negotiating a pedestrian crossing.

I'm Dean Homicki. I look forward to joining you in the next module where we recap and review 'The why what and who of TGSIs.’
