Session 10 of 12

Living with: (AMD) Age-related Macular Degeneration

Course: TSA-TGSI-1.10 | Length: 3:02 mins | Instructor: Dean Homicki

Transcript

In this session, we're going to learn about:

What is it like living with: Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

In this module, we explore what a vision-impaired person may experience living with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and how the built environment may appear to them in their daily life. To gain some insight, let's begin with:

What is Age-related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related Macular Degeneration affects the macular region of the retina, which is used for straight-ahead sight.
This is sometimes referred to as (Central Vision Loss).
Activities which rely on the macula functioning well are reading, writing, looking at detailed objects, and colour vision.

A person living with Age-related Macular Degeneration could experience their environment in the following ways:

  • They could have a gradual decline in the ability to see objects clearly

  • They may experience Distorted vision

  • Experience dark or empty spaces blocking the central field of vision

  • or, A Dimming of colour vision

  • and, They may also have Visual hallucinations

What would it be like to have: Age-related Macular Degeneration
and how could it affect your orientation and mobility?

Simulation

Orientation in a built environment if you had: Age-related Macular Degeneration. In this simulation of what it might be like if you had Age-related Macular Degeneration, we are walking, descending a staircase, then negotiating a pedestrian crossing.

In the next Course Module, we view a simulation if you had: (NLP) No Light Perception - (Total Blindness).  We will demonstrate what you could experience as you orientate yourself in a built environment.

I'm Dean Homicki and I look forward to joining you in the next Learning Session
