Session 9 of 12

Living with: Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)

Course: TSA-TGSI-1.9 | Length: 2:53 mins | Instructor: Dean Homicki

Transcript

In this session, we're going to learn about:

What is it like living with: Retinitis Pigmentosa?

In this module, we explore what a vision-impaired person may experience living with Retinitis Pigmentosa and how the built environment may appear to them in their daily life. To gain some insight, let's begin with:

What is Retinitis Pigmentosa or Tunnel Vision?

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a genetic eye condition that causes cells in the light-sensitive retina, located at the back of the eye, to degenerate slowly and progressively. The condition can vary greatly. While many people with RP retain limited vision throughout their lives, others will lose their sight completely

A person living with Retinitis Pigmentosa could experience their environment in the following ways:

  • They may have difficulty seeing at night (Night Blindness)

  • Have difficulty seeing in dimly lit areas

  • They could experience a narrowing Field of vision

  • a and, have Light and Glare sensitivity

What would it be like to have: Retinitis Pigmentosa
and how could it affect your orientation and mobility?

Simulation

Orientation in a built environment if you had: Retinitis Pigmentosa. In this simulation of what it might be like if you had Retinitis Pigmentosa, we are walking, descending a staircase, then negotiating a pedestrian crossing.

In the next Course Module, we view a simulation if you had: Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).  We will demonstrate what you could experience as you orientate yourself in a built environment.

I'm Dean Homicki and I look forward to joining you in the next Learning Session
