Session 8 of 12
Living with: Glaucoma
Course: TSA-TGSI-1.8 | Length: 2:31 mins | Instructor: Dean Homicki
Transcript
In this session, we're going to learn about:
What is it like living with: Glaucoma?
In this module, we explore what a vision-impaired person may experience living with Glaucoma and how the built environment may appear to them in their daily life. To gain some insight, let's begin with:
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a common form of eye disease that affects the optic nerve connecting the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is often caused by high intraocular pressure, a result of a blockage in the eye's drainage system
A person living with Glaucoma could experience their environment in the following ways:
They could experience Painless, Blurred vision
Have a loss of Peripheral Vision (that is, they may only have a visual field of 18 degrees or less)
and, have difficulty adjusting to low light
What would it be like to have: Glaucoma
and how could it affect your orientation and mobility?
Simulation
Orientation in a built environment if you had: Glaucoma. In this simulation of what it might be like if you had Glaucoma, we are walking, descending a staircase, then negotiating a pedestrian crossing.
In the next Course Module, we view a simulation if you had: Retinitis Pigmentosa or (Tunnel Vision). We will demonstrate what you could experience as you orientate yourself in a built environment.
I'm Dean Homicki and I look forward to joining you in the next Learning Session
