Session 6 of 12
Living with: Cataracts
Course: TSA-TGSI-1.6 | Length: 2:20 mins | Instructor: Dean Homicki
Transcript
In this session, we're going to learn about:
What is it like living with: Cataracts?
In this module, we explore what a vision-impaired person may experience living with Cataracts and how the built environment may appear to them in their daily life. To gain some insight, let's begin with:
What are Cataracts?
A cataract is a clouding of the clear lens in the eye and is one of the leading causes of vision impairment. While cataracts most commonly occur in those who are older, they can develop in younger people as well.
A person living with Cataracts could experience their environment in the following ways:
They may experience Blurred Vision or Glare sensitivity.
They could experience Distortion or Double vision in the affected eye with Cataract.
And, they may also have a feeling of looking through a veil or curtain.
What would it be like to have: Cataracts, and how could it affect your orientation and mobility?
Simulation
Orientation in a built environment if you had: Cataracts In this simulation of what it might be like if you had Cataracts, we are walking, descending a staircase, then negotiating a pedestrian crossing.
In the next Course Module, we view a simulation if you had: Diabetic Retinopathy. We will demonstrate what you could experience as you orientate yourself in a built environment.
I'm Dean Homicki and I look forward to joining you in the next Learning Session
